The Sunderland Astronomical Society’s Astrophotography Competition will held on Sunday 28th July 2024 and we are returning to our pre Covid format.
The event will be held at the Washington wetlands centre from 7:00 pm, where the best of our SAS astrophotographer images will be displayed and voted on at the event.
All members attending the event can vote even if they have not submitted images.
Here is your chance to show off your astronomical images taken in the last year.
Some simple rules apply, so please read carefully:
- Voting will close at 8pm on Sunday 28th July
- The most votes on images will determine the winners.
- Groups and Categories
This year there will be 2 groups each with 2 categories - Groups

- Beginners (less than 12months doing astrophotography).
- Expert.
- Categories:

- Solar System.
- Deep Sky.(Includes Milky Way shots).
The Winners and Runners up will win the highly prized SAS Astrophotography certificates.
Astrophotographers bring your printed images with you on the night of the competition.
The society has the facility to print images for members it they require it, but please submit your images in good time and at least two weeks before the competition date by bringing an electronic copy of your image to the Wetlands Centre.
Competition Rules
There are 2 main rules for competition image entries:
Rule 1: Each astronomical object/image taken within the last twelve months should be printed on a photograph up to A4 in size with the following information on the back of each photo.
Category (i.e. Solar System, Deep Sky or Smartphone/Tablet).
Skill Level, (i.e. Less than or more than 12 months experience).
Name of your astronomical object, associated identifier (for e.g. Orion Nebula, M42);
Equipment used to take the image; (for e.g. Skywatcher Evostar 80 DS-PRO ED, Cannon 600D, EQ6, etc);
Your Name;
Your contact details (Email/Tel No.)”, if required.
Alternatively, if you prefer the following information can be written on a piece of paper/post-it note on then stuck on the back of your photo (if you wish to preserve you photo – post it notes can be provided on the night):
Rule 2: The astrophotography competition is open to Sunderland Astronomical Society members only (i.e. members subscriptions paid, although you could join on the night of the competition).
